Admission Requirement into Heidelberg University 1-2-1 Nursing Pathway
To be eligible for admission into the Nursing 1-2-1 Pathway, students must have earned a minimum of 3.0 GPA in high school.
Students interested in entry into the 1-2-1 pathway pre-licensure nursing education administered and awarded an Associate of Applied Science Degree by Terra State Community College (TSCC) must complete at least one semester of residency coursework at Heidelberg and meet TSCC Admission Policy requirements. A minimum of ten seats per semester are reserved for Heidelberg applicants. The Heidelberg nursing program director and/or academic advisor will assist students with the admission process as needed. Heidelberg students in the 1-2-1 consortium will enter TSCC under the option for admission labeled “Two Year Registered Nursing Program- Direct Placement from College Transfer” students.
Students must:
- Maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.800* or better in the following courses:
- Anatomy and Physiology I and II (with labs)
- College Writing II
- General Psychology
The following items are not required prior to admittance. A cumulative GPA of 2.800 or better is required in these courses if completed prior to admission.
- Microbiology
- Lifespan Psychology
- College Algebra or Statistics
- Interpersonal Communication
- Introduction to Ethics or Bioethics
- Complete required nursing major science courses within 5 years of application submission.
- Obtain an ACT minimum composite score of 20 within the last 3 years. If a score of 20 was not reached, the applicant must complete the online Assessment Technologies, Inc. Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) test and provide a printed copy of scores to TSCC as posted per semester of application. The TEAS score must reach a minimum of “Proficient.” The TEAS test must be current within 3 years.
- Schedule an appointment with the TSCC nursing advisor to complete the nursing Admission Rubric. The Rubric is a point system based on the TEAS score, a minimum of 2.800 GPA in the courses listed #1 above, and no less than a C (2.000) in Anatomy and Physiology I and II. The date and time of application submission will determine admission when a rubric score (minimum of 8 points required), is equal to another student’s rubric score for the last seat.
- Students who meet the above admission criteria will complete an interview with the TSCC nursing faculty.
- Prior to the faculty interview, students must provide the following:
FBI and BCI background checks
- Three letters of recommendation – one of which is to be written by a science faculty
- Health and immunization forms (available in Stoner Health Center)
- Responsibilities Agreement form
- American Heart Association BLS certification
- Students must submit written confirmation to TSCC Director of Nursing when offered a seat in the program.
Terra State Community College Policies on Retention, Probation, and Dismissal Once admitted to the TSCC pre-licensure nursing program, students will follow the TSCC Nursing Student Handbook for progression and academic standing policies.
Clinical Requirements
Prior to attending clinicals in NRS 440 and NRS 470 , students must satisfactorily complete a new FBI/BCI check, a 9 or 10-panel set of lab values, and a drug screen prior to entering into the clinical site. Other requirements may apply, depending on the site requirements for clinical experiences. Clinical site contracts will outline site requirements at the time a site is selected and a supervisor/preceptor is identified. If a clinical is at the student’s employer site, these values must be submitted by the clinical organization prior to entering into these aforementioned courses. (It is recommended these checks be completed the semester prior to the two aforementioned clinical courses because delays in results can occur.)
Post-licensure Nursing Program Policy on Satisfactory Academic Standing
Students in the post-licensure nursing program must:
- Maintain a current, valid, unencumbered Ohio license or other U.S. state registered nurse license, otherwise not prohibited by National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (SARA) for enrollment. Some states may prohibit nurses from practicing clinical experiences outside of their licensed state or state of education, making it impossible for students to secure healthcare facilities for clinical or project-based experiences. As a result, the Heidelberg nursing program will not be accepting applications for distance learning from residents in the following states: Arizona, California, Louisiana, Massachusetts, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Tennessee. This includes nurses who live in another state but desire clinicals in any of the italicized states listed above.
Completing the NRS 400-level courses - Entry options for completion of the post-licensure portion of the 1-2-1 Pathway include the following:
- Licensed: Eligible students are graduates of Terra State Community College, hold an Associate of Applied Science degree in nursing, and have successfully completed the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX).
- Unlicensed: Eligible students are graduates of Terra State Community College, hold an Associate of Applied Science degree in nursing, and are eligible to sit for the NCLEX. These students may complete up to 6 credit hours of Heidelberg’s 400-level nursing (NRS) courses. Thereafter, registering nurse licensure is required to remain in the program.
- Maintain a cumulative and semester GPA of 2.500 while enrolled in the post-licensure program.
- Receive satisfactory evaluations from clinical site supervisors and course/clinical faculty for clinical experiences.
- Earn a “C” (2.000 quality point) or better in every post-licensure nursing course.
Post-licensure Nursing Program Policy on Probation
Post-licensure students will be evaluated each semester by the course faculty. Clinical portions of nursing courses will be graded as “satisfactory” or “unsatisfactory.” A student will be placed on probation when a grade of “unsatisfactory” is earned in the clinical portion of a clinical course. A grade of “C-” (1.667 quality points) or below in a nursing course is considered an unacceptable academic standard in the program. If a “C-” or below is earned in the didactic portion of a clinical course or in a sole didactic course, the student will be placed on probation, but may remain in the program. The nursing student on probation will be allowed to progress in coursework, with the understanding that all courses must be completed with a “C” (2.000 quality points) or better grade.
Post-licensure Nursing Program Policy on Program Dismissal
If the final grade of “C-” (1.667 quality points) or below is earned twice in the same course, the student will be dismissed from the nursing program. If a student earns a final grade of “C-” (1.667 quality points) or below in 2 nursing courses, the student will be dismissed from the program. Dismissal from the nursing program does not automatically equate to dismissal from Heidelberg University. Students may continue to take courses to meet graduation requirements for other areas of study, provided University requirements are met.
Appeals
Heidelberg University policy will be followed for grade appeals for courses taken at Heidelberg and for program dismissal appeals. Appeals for courses taken at TSCC follow their policies and procedures.
Terra State Community College Policy on Academic Reinstatement
Pre-licensure students in nursing courses at TSCC who are dismissed must follow TSCC policies for reinstatement.
Policy on Academic Reinstatement
Pre-nursing students will follow the Academic Probation and Suspension policies (see Progression Requirements in the Undergraduate Catalog).
Pre-licensure nursing students who are dismissed from the nursing program must follow Terra State Community College Policy 2.5 for reinstatement.
Post-licensure students who are dismissed from the nursing program must follow the following procedures for reinstatement:
- Application for readmission may be submitted after any one semester has passed.
- Upon request for readmission, a letter of intent to return to the nursing program must be submitted to the director of the nursing program at least 4 weeks prior to the semester in which the student wishes to return.
- Upon receipt of the letter, the director will schedule an appointment with the student.
- Within two weeks of this meeting, the student will receive written notification from the program director regarding status: re-entry or dismissal.
If dismissed from the nursing program, students may be readmitted to the nursing program only once.
Policy on Professional Conduct
Professionalism as a nursing student reflects a myriad of character traits and behaviors. Students will demonstrate professionalism in coursework: classroom and clinical settings. Core and professional values will be demonstrated by all students during online interactions with peers and faculty, and in clinical settings with peers, site representatives, and faculty. Nursing students are expected to follow the American Nurses Code of Ethics with Interpretive Statements (2015).
The Nursing Major, offered by the Department of Nursing, in consortial partnership with Terra State Community College, is designed to provide a general preparation, then theoretical and clinical applications of nursing at the baccalaureate level. The successful completion of this major is contingent upon the successful completion of Terra State Community College’s Associate of Applied Science degree and the national licensing examination (NCLEX-RN) to become a Registered Nurse. Fourth year coursework at Heidelberg University leads to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Degree.
