NRS 440 - Community and Population Health Nursing


4 Credit Hour(s) Laboratory: 0 Recitation: 2 Alternative Mode: 2 (Clinical)

This course contains both a theoretical and clinical component and the integration of both in community and public health nursing practice. This course will facilitate the student’s ability to analyze professional issues and social justice concerns that impact community and public health in the provision of nursing care in situations apart from controlled environments. Students will be introduced to community assessment techniques as they apply principles of primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention in a community. Global health challenges such as caring for vulnerable populations and providing care are explored to enhance competency for professional practice in communities. Additional skills will be developed such as investigation and surveillance skills for solving outbreak situations. The impact of culture-based beliefs on global public health infrastructures, resources, and issues will be deliberated, which will deepen student understanding of the societal factors that impact health.

Prerequisite(s): Post-licensure nursing major.
