The nursing degree integrates the Liberal Arts tradition to educate and equip nurses with the balance needed to advance science, use technology, and apply theory and research to care for individuals in all settings. Through innovative activities, the curriculum educates leaders in nursing who promote health for individuals, families, and populations locally and globally. The nursing curriculum commits to offering opportunities that prepare students to be global citizens who communicate effectively, think critically, and serve thoughtfully. The curriculum informs nurses to lead professional and interprofessional teams and organizations across the healthcare continuum. This program is dedicated to developing professionals who value lifelong learning while preparing them for living a life of purpose and distinction.

Mission

The mission of the nursing program, in accordance with Heidelberg University, is to cultivate a community of learning that nurtures intellectual, personal, and professional development. This development of individuals promotes lifelong learning, compassion and caring, in preparation for living a life of purpose with distinction.

Philosophy and Values

The philosophy of the nursing program is aligned with the mission and goals expressed by Heidelberg University. The nursing program integrates the Liberal Arts tradition to equip nurses with skills needed to lead professional and interprofessional teams and organizations in a variety of settings. The expectation of caring and compassion for human existence is based on trust, promoted through integrity, and demonstrated as acts of advocacy. Advancing the science of nursing improves the health of all individuals. Through innovation and creativity, the program goal is to educate individuals to become agile leaders in nursing who promote health for individuals, families, and populations of the world. The nursing program is committed to offering opportunities that prepare students to become global citizens who communicate effectively, think critically, serve thoughtfully and champion social justice.

Nursing is an academic discipline, a practice profession, and a champion of interprofessional collaboration. Professional nursing incorporates the nursing metaparadigms that include person, environment, health, and nursing. The metaparadigm of person focuses on the individuality of the recipient of care. The metaparadigm of health refers to the person’s level of wellness and quality of life. The metaparadigm of nursing is related to the art and science of providing care. The metaparadigm of environment relates to internal, external, and social factors that impact the person.

Professional values to be conveyed include patient confidentiality to respect privacy and self determination, punctuality to build trust, personal appearance and behaviors to convey professionalism, and projected sense of service through use of self to address the whole person with physical, psychological, social, or spiritual needs.

Program Outcomes

Upon completion of the undergraduate nursing program, the student will be able to:

  1. Navigate complex nursing practice situations through integration of concepts, skills, and the values of humanism from a liberal education.
  2. Lead transformative care for patients across the lifespan by minimizing risk, fostering quality improvement, and stimulating innovative initiatives.
  3. Appraise theory-guided research to identify practice issues and support adoption of best practices in the delivery of patient care.
  4. Provide efficient patient care using scientific technologies and information management systems to identify health alterations and complex care needs in a variety of healthcare settings.
  5. Advocate for policy, finance, and regulation changes that foster improved processes for patient care in local and global health care delivery systems.
  6. Communicate for collaboration across healthcare professions to provide comprehensive patient centered care.
  7. Employ principles of prevention and health promotion to provide culturally competent care to individuals, families, communities, and populations.
  8. Apply personal values, learning values, and professional values that promote innovation, quality improvement, and a culture of excellence in professional nursing practice.
  9. Provide comprehensive care to diverse recipients across the continuum of healthcare environments using elements of baccalaureate nursing education, professional standards, and principles of social justice.

Definitions

Pre-nursing students: students who are completing many pre-requisite general education, liberal arts curriculum courses who have not yet been accepted into the Terra State Community College’s Associate of Applied Science program in nursing.

Pre-licensure nursing students: students who have been accepted into the Terra State Community College’s Associate of Applied Science program as a nursing cohort.

Post-licensure nursing students: students who have been awarded registered nurse licensure through a state board of nursing. These students will complete the 400-level nursing courses online through the electronic learning management system of Heidelberg University.

Program of Study Requirements

Degree Requirements

All degree candidates for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing must complete the following requirements. (Refer to policies listed within the University Catalog for individual details.)

  • Achieve a minimum of 120 semester hours.
  • Earn a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.00 to qualify for a degree.
  • Achieve a minimum of a C (2.000 quality points) in all required courses.
  • Fulfill all requirements of the nursing major. One minor is permissible, but not required.
  • Complete half of the major and/or minor course requirements in residence.
  • Undergraduate Academic Foundation- complete one of the following (a) Bachelor of Science in Nursing General Education Requirements, (b) for Heidelberg transfer matriculants, a Bachelor degree from an accredited institution, or an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree from an accredited state-assisted institution of higher education in Ohio.
  • Complete Responsibility and Major Related Requirements.
  • Complete one year of the HYPE Career Ready Program.
  • Complete no fewer than 30 semester hours at the junior level or above (300 or 400 levels at Heidelberg) at four-year institutions.
  • Take at least the senior-year in residence; or, in a Heidelberg-approved academic experience. Sixty semester hours must be earned at a four-year, accredited institution to qualify for a degree. (See also the Active-duty Servicemembers in the Academic Policies section of this catalog.)
  • Work toward one degree.
  • A maximum of 2 semester hours in ESS 100 may be applied toward the 120 semester hours required for graduation.

  • WRI 101  (3 hours)
  • Mathematics-Based Course: (3 hours)  from above list or TMTH 2010 Statistics (TSCC)
  • Fine Arts and Humanities Breadth of Experience: at least 9 credit hours from at least 3 different prefixes 
  • Natural Science: Students must complete at least 6 credit hours from at least 2 different prefixes; one course must have a laboratory.  
  • Social Science: Students must complete at least 6 credit hours from at least 2 different prefixes. 
  • Self Community: Students must complete at least 6 credit hours from above list or Approved Study Abroad Experience
    • Study abroad experience - more than four weeks, but less than a full semster will count for 3 credit hours towards Self and Community.
    • Study  abroad experience - Full semester experience will count for 6 credit hours - Self and Community
    • Another experience approved in writing by the Provost to fulfill Self and Community.
