COU 609 - Etiology and Diagnosis of Mental Disorders 3 Credit Hour(s)
Covers the structure and uses of the current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (DSM) and the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) systems for diagnosing mental and emotional disorders. Additional focus will be on the development and recognition of a framework for identifying symptomatology, etiology, and psychodynamics of mental and emotional disorders, including differential diagnoses. The course will also instruct on diagnostic assessment interview skills as well as conducting mental status examinations. The impact of sociocultural factors in diagnosis will be identified. (Spring)
