NRS 460 - Healthcare Policy and Advocacy

This course explores major topics in the study of health policy and healthcare delivery. Students and faculty will discuss the U.S. healthcare system, its organizational structure, financing, and historical contexts in comparison to systems of other nations. The course will review determinants of health, distribution of care, and the impact of cost and quality on healthcare services. Additionally, students will appraise the U.S. process for health policy creation and legislation. Conditions of the healthcare system reform will be discussed in relation to advocacy roles of nurses. This course employs sociological, political, economic, and ethical perspectives on policy, healthcare systems, and subsequent challenges of meeting the needs of healthcare stakeholders.

Prerequisite(s): Post-licensure nursing major.
