EDU 226 - Introduction to Middle Childhood and Adolescent to Young Adult Education

Introduces students to the history, context, and current trends in middle childhood and adolescent to young adult education. Students will examine developmentally appropriate, research-based practices, essential questions, and assessment currently in the educational field related to working with pre-adolescents and adolescents in a variety of settings. Emphasis will be on the developmental characteristics of pre-adolescents and adolescents and how this relates to developing a positive classroom climate suitable for this age range. Perspectives, characteristics, and dispositions of teaching professionals will be explored. Time in an inclusive classroom enables students to observe, discuss and apply course content to their understanding of pedagogical philosophies, early and adolescent development, and developmentally appropriate early and adolescent practices. 20 hours field experience required. Prerequisite(s): Minimum 2.85 GPA.
