Mission Statement
Heidelberg’s Athletic Training Program is designed to prepare the Athletic Training student for the certification process and examination administered by the Board of Certification (BOC), as well as a career as a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) in a variety of professional settings.
Program Goals and Objectives
- The Athletic Training Program will prepare graduate students to enter the athletic training profession by developing competency in:
- Evidence Based Practice
- Prevention and Health Promotion
- Clinical Diagnosis and Examinations
- Acute Care of Injury and Illness
- Therapeutic Interventions
- Psychosocial Strategies and Referral
- Health Care Administration
- Professional Development and Responsibilities
- Teach the knowledge, skills, and values that will aid the entry-level Certified Athletic Trainer in becoming a successful Allied Health Care Professional.
- Expose students to a variety of related clinical education settings and other educational experiences.
- Promote involvement in research and professional development.
- Promote high ethical and moral standards as well as personal conduct.
Admission Requirements
Admission to the Master of Athletic Training Program is competitive and selective. Applicants are required to complete the online application and submit on or before April 1. The prerequisites for admission are as follows:

- Introductory Psychology
- Kinesiology/Biomechanics
- Pharmacology
- Pathology
- General Chemistry
- Physics
- Statistics
- Recommended Prerequisites
- Nutrition
- Exercise Physiology
- First Aid/AED/CPR/EMT Certifications
- Additional Requirements
- A minimum College/University bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and a prerequisite GPA of 3.0.
- A minimum of 50 clinical observation hours under the direct supervision of a Board of Certification (BOC) and state credentialed, certified athletic trainer.
Transfer Credit
Students wishing to transfer credits into the MAT program from another CAATE accredited MAT program will be evaluated on a case by case basis. Transferred course credits will be limited to no more than 12 credit hours.
Honor Society
Iota Tau Alpha, Athletic Training Education Honor Society’s purpose shall be to function as an honor and professional society for students of Athletic Training Programs. The Beta Gamma Chapter of Iota Tau Alpha activities shall be designed to stimulate interest, scholarly attainment, investigate in Athletic Training Education, and promote the dissemination of information and new interpretations of the Society’s activities among students of Athletic Training Programs.
