Biology (BIO)

The programs of the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences are designed to provide a background in the earth and life sciences within the context of a liberal arts education, and to prepare majors for occupational goals and advanced training. Courses serve students in the basic liberal arts program, those who plan to teach in elementary or secondary schools, and students who are interested in scientific research. The department offers two majors (Biology, Environmental Science and Sustainability), two minors (Biology, Environmental Studies), and a specialization in Watershed Science.

Natural Areas

Heidelberg administers four natural areas which total nearly 100 acres and are an average distance of 15 miles from campus. In addition, state-managed river and marsh preserves are within a half-hour’s drive. Heidelberg’s natural areas represent four different types of woodlands. Two of these parcels, undisturbed for more than a century, were given to the University by two alumni, Paul Bartholomew and Wayne Funk. Also readily available to students for field study is Rock Creek, which flows through the main part of campus.

Belize

This class (spring vacation in alternate years) spends several days snorkeling in a variety of reef environments on the second longest barrier reef in the world. The trip also includes visits to several inland environments.

Internships

In recent years Heidelberg biology and environmental science majors have filled internships in a wide variety of situations. Local internship opportunities have included those provided by Waste Management, Inc., area departments of health, Ohio EPA, Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Sandusky River watershed coalition, Toledo Sight Center, hospitals and nursing homes and the National Center for Water Quality Research. Students have completed internships with the National Institutes of Health near Washington, DC and in programs with various universities and research facilities.

Biochemistry (BCH)

The programs of the Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Physics Department are designed to provide a background in the chemical and biochemical sciences within the context of a liberal arts education. The department offers two majors (Chemistry and Biochemistry) and one minor (Chemistry). These majors and courses of the department are designed to prepare students for employment, professional school or graduate school, teaching in elementary or secondary schools, and scientific research.

Chemistry (CHM)

The programs of the Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Physics Department are designed to provide a background in the chemical and biochemical sciences within the context of a liberal arts education. The department offers two majors (Chemistry and Biochemistry) and one minor (Chemistry). These majors and courses of the department are designed to prepare students for employment, professional school or graduate school, teaching in elementary or secondary schools, and scientific research.

The Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Physics Department does not issue grade waivers in any of its majors or minors. Additionally, Chemistry majors are not eligible to double major in Biochemistry.

Computer Science (CPS)

The programs of the Department of Computer Science and Mathematics are designed to prepare students for successful careers and/or further study in the ever-evolving discipline of computer science within the context of a liberal arts education. This preparation includes the application of fundamental computer science principles; software development skills; and the analysis, design, implementation, and administration of information systems projects. The Department offers both a major and a minor in computer science.

Mathematics (MTH)

The Department of Computer Science and Mathematics seeks to contribute to the educational mission of Heidelberg University by providing: 1. service courses for other departments in which mathematics is considered a vital tool; 2. the necessary mathematics preparation for prospective elementary and secondary school teachers.

Department of Nursing (NUR, NRS)

The nursing degree integrates the Liberal Arts tradition to educate and equip nurses with the balance needed to advance science, use technology, and apply theory and research to care for individuals in all settings. Through innovative activities, the curriculum educates leaders in nursing who promote health for individuals, families, and populations locally and globally. The nursing curriculum commits to offering opportunities that prepare students to be global citizens who communicate effectively, think critically, and serve thoughtfully. The curriculum informs nurses to lead professional and interprofessional teams and organizations across the healthcare continuum. This program is dedicated to developing professionals who value lifelong learning while preparing them for living a life of purpose and distinction.

Physics (PHY)

Physics, housed within the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry deals with the structure and properties of matter, the transformation and propagation of energy and the relationships between matter and energy. Students enrolled in physics can learn physical principles that can be applied to everyday situations and to modern technology from aviation to medical imaging. Students can also learn the consequences of physics in regard to its philosophical implications and social impact such as in theories of cosmology.
