EDU 230 - Foundations of Reading

This course is the first course of Ohio’s required 12 Semester-Hour Reading Core and aligns to the metrics for the Science of Reading. This course focuses on understanding how children learn to read, why some struggle, and essential effective strategies for supporting all readers. Learning how to read and write is a complex process that students will explore using scientifically-based research on literacy and language development aligned to the Report of the National Reading Panel. All course content will be grounded and connected to the five essential components for reading: phonological awareness; phonemic awareness; fluency; vocabulary; and comprehension. All candidates will complete the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce online professional development module on the Science of Reading.  (Spring)

Prerequisite(s): Minimum 2.85 GPA.
